Former Minister slams Tinubu’s comments on food stampedes

Former Education Minister and founder of the FixPolitics Initiative, Oby Ezekwesili, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu and other Nigerian politicians, accusing them of lacking empathy and responsibility in addressing the country’s ongoing crises.

Ezekwesili’s condemnation follows a series of tragic stampedes during festive food distributions in Ibadan, Anambra, and the Federal Capital Territory, which claimed over 60 lives, including children.

In a statement shared on X, Ezekwesili lamented the lack of compassion among public officials.

“Humility and empathy remain in short supply among our public officials, and that’s unfortunate,” she wrote.

President Tinubu had attributed the stampedes to “indiscipline” among beneficiaries and poor event coordination, a response Ezekwesili described as disconnected from the harsh realities faced by Nigerians.

“These self-indulgent folks are cocooned away in luxury and blind to how desperate the times are,” she remarked.

Ezekwesili further accused the Tinubu administration of exploiting Nigerians’ suffering and called for greater accountability to tackle the root causes of widespread poverty and despair in the nation.
