Clerics accuse Southeast Governors of betraying Igbo nation over Nnamdi Kanu’s detention
Clerics under the Concerned Igbo Ministers Commission have condemned the governors of the Southeast region for their role in the prolonged detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In an open letter dated January 8, 2025, signed by President-General/International Coordinator Tony Anthony and Secretary-General Tony Osuji, the group accused the Southeast governors of betraying the Igbo nation.
The letter claims that it has become evident that both President Bola Tinubu and the Southeast governors have worked to ensure Kanu’s continued detention.
The clerics referenced a recent revelation by Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu, who disclosed a pre-election deal involving Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son, with the approval of President Tinubu. According to the agreement, Kanu’s release would be contingent upon Tinubu winning the 2023 presidential election.
The group also accused the governors of contributing to the insecurity in the region and said that they should have pressed President Tinubu for Kanu’s release.
“We, as a group, are now urging all religious leaders to begin raising questions about Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is yet to be released,” the letter stated.
The clerics condemned Kanu’s continued detention, calling it a severe humiliation of the Igbo people.
