Woman arraigned for allegedly obtaining N4.01 million under false pretences
The police in Lagos State on Thursday dragged a 37-year-old woman, Jennifer Edward, before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N4.01 million under false pretences.
The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate Funke Ogun, who presided over the case on behalf of Magistrate L.K J Layeni.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of fraud and stealing.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Esther Adesulu, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on October 14, 2024, at the Alaba International Market, Ojo.
She alleged that the defendant obtained the sum of N4.01 million from one Chidi Innocent, with a promise to supply 2,000 pieces of yam tubers to him.
She alleged that the representation was false, as the defendant failed to perform the task to the nominal complainant, but converted the money to her own use.
The prosecutor said that the defendant was eventually arrested by the police.
The offences contravene the provisions of Sections 287 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The magistrate adjourned the case until February 26 for trial.
