Seyi Tinubu deserves recognition, not criticism – Balami
Prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and youth advocate, Comrade Isaac Balami, has dismissed the recent criticisms surrounding Seyi Tinubu’s visit to the north, describing them as unnecessary and politically motivated.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Balami suggested that the backlash may have been triggered by calls from Nigerians and Lagos residents urging Seyi Tinubu to contest for the Lagos State governorship seat.
Balami, a former spokesperson of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and ex-national president of the Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, stated that rather than privately expressing his gratitude to Seyi Tinubu, he chose to speak out publicly to correct misconceptions and enlighten misinformed Nigerians.
According to him, Seyi Tinubu should be celebrated for his selfless efforts toward national unity and humanitarian service, rather than being vilified. He emphasized that Tinubu’s charitable initiatives extend across religious and political lines, benefiting Nigerians from all backgrounds.
Balami dismissed the criticism of Tinubu’s northern tour, stating: “Those against his actions know that his efforts are not just beneficial to him but also empower young people across Nigeria.”
He further argued that Tinubu’s philanthropic activities never attracted controversy until discussions about his potential political aspirations arose.
Balami added that Seyi Tinubu’s continued outreach, especially to young people and the less privileged, has positioned him as a champion of peace and unity. “Many Nigerian parents would wish for a child like Seyi—one who is committed to doing what is right in the eyes of God, rather than pleasing men,” he remarked.
Urging young politicians, local government officials, and entrepreneurs to follow Tinubu’s example, Balami noted that his charitable works predate his father’s presidency. “Seyi has been carrying out these Ramadan outreach programs for over a decade. Should he now stop simply because his father is the president?”
He also dismissed claims that Tinubu’s initiatives were politically motivated, arguing that even if they were, such efforts should be encouraged rather than condemned.
Balami contrasted Tinubu’s humility and service with the behavior of many children of political leaders, saying: “Most children of presidents live extravagant lifestyles and distance themselves from the people. But Seyi Tinubu has remained down to earth. Would Nigerians rather see him partying abroad than supporting the needy?”
Expressing concern over how serious matters are often trivialized in Nigeria, Balami pointed out that many influential Nigerians regularly support both Christian and Muslim communities during religious observances. He questioned why Seyi Tinubu’s visit to the north was being treated differently.
He also recalled Tinubu’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic, where his foundation provided critical support across the country. He further highlighted Tinubu’s generosity in helping individuals across party lines, including those who had previously opposed his father.
Balami emphasized that Tinubu’s organization employs a diverse workforce, with over 50% of its staff being northerners, reinforcing his commitment to national unity.
In conclusion, he insisted that Seyi Tinubu deserves recognition, stating: “He should be awarded a medal, not attacked. My prayer is that every family has a ‘Seyi’—someone dedicated to uplifting others.”
Encouraging Tinubu to ignore distractions, Balami reassured him: “People throw stones at trees that bear fruit. Stay focused, and history will remember you for your positive impact.”
Seyi Tinubu recently toured northern states in solidarity with Muslim communities during Ramadan, where he engaged in charitable activities and empowered individuals.
