A Nigerian man, Jonathan Biodun, who was imprisoned over an unpaid debt of ₦1,137,000, has regained his freedom thanks to the generosity of compassionate individuals who raised funds to clear his debt.
The case gained public attention when a group of social media influencers visited a correctional facility for a friendly football match with inmates. During the visit, an inmate discreetly handed a letter to one of the influencers, pleading for help. The letter was later shared online, sparking widespread support.
In the letter, Jonathan expressed his desperation, addressing popular Twitter users he had seen assisting others online. He explained that he had previously sought help on social media but was dismissed as a scammer. His message resonated with many, leading to an outpouring of support.
One of the influencers, Sir Dickson, known as #Wizarab10, amplified Jonathan’s plea, emphasizing that imprisonment over debt should not be a reality. His tweet read:
“Nobody should be in prison over a debt. It is not a criminal offence. I have spoken to #egi_nupe___, and we will be taking it up. Imagine rotting in prison because you’re poor.”
Following this, a public donation campaign was launched, and within weeks, enough money was raised to settle the debt. Jonathan was subsequently released from the Apapa Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
In an emotional video shared by Ray of Hope Prison Outreach, he expressed deep gratitude:
“Hello, everyone. My name is Thomas Jonathan Biodun. I have just been released from Apapa Kirikiri Correctional Centre. I’m using this opportunity to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who donated, contributed, or supported me in any way. I am so grateful. You have no idea what this freedom means to me. From the depth of my heart, I’m saying a very big thank you to you all.”
His story highlights the power of social media advocacy and the impact of collective goodwill in transforming lives.
