Governor Okpebholo halts operations of response team after toddler’s death
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has indefinitely suspended the Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) following the tragic death of a two-year-old girl during an altercation between the team and a bus driver.
The suspension, which took effect on Friday, March 14, was in response to the public outcry over the incident.
Reports indicate that the unfortunate event occurred when a bus went out of control and crashed into a Point of Sale (PoS) kiosk where the child and her mother were standing.
Eyewitnesses stated that the accident happened as PSRT operatives struggled with the driver for control of the steering wheel.
The crash led to the child’s immediate death due to the impact of the collision.
In an official statement, Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, confirmed the governor’s directive, stating:
“The general public is hereby informed that the Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has ordered the indefinite suspension of the Public Safety Response Team, led by Kelly Okungbowa.”
The move follows increasing concerns over the conduct of the team and calls for better enforcement of public safety measures in the state.
