Ondo: FRSC urges motorists to practice defensive driving, exercise patience
As the rainy season approaches, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State has advised motorists to be patient and adopt defensive driving techniques to prevent accidents on highways.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Akure on Sunday, the FRSC State Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, emphasized the need for vehicle maintenance ahead of the rainy season.
“With the rainy season gradually setting in, it is important for all drivers to prepare by ensuring their vehicles are in good condition,” he said.
He highlighted the need for motorists to check essential vehicle components such as wipers, headlamps, air conditioners, and tyres to ensure they are in perfect working order.
“During heavy downpours, it is safer to park in a secure location rather than continue driving under poor visibility conditions,” Ibitoye advised.
He also urged drivers to keep their headlamps on when driving in the rain to improve visibility for themselves and other road users.
“To avoid accidents, we encourage motorists to adhere to defensive driving techniques and exercise patience on the road. Speeding should be avoided because patience is key to saving lives,” he added.
The sector commander also warned that traffic violators would be sanctioned while calling on transport unions and stakeholders to collaborate with the FRSC in promoting road safety.
“Our primary concern is ensuring that Nigerians use well-maintained vehicles that can safely transport them without causing hazards on the road. By doing this, we safeguard human resources that contribute to the nation’s growth,” he noted.
Ibitoye further urged passengers to speak up against reckless driving, stressing that their safety should not be left entirely in the hands of drivers.
“Statistics show that crashes often claim more lives of passengers than drivers. If you notice your driver driving dangerously, politely ask them to slow down. If they refuse, report them at any FRSC, police, or military checkpoint for necessary action,” he advised.
