Edo govt accuses PDP of contributing to insecurity

The Edo State Government has alleged that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is responsible for the growing insecurity in the state, claiming that the party armed over 5,000 youths and suspected thugs during the last governorship election.

The government also stated that intelligence reports suggest the PDP is holding onto these weapons and allegedly acquiring more to create unrest if its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, does not receive a favorable ruling from the election petition tribunal.

In a statement released by Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the government expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation, attributing it to individuals associated with the PDP.

According to the statement, these armed individuals were reportedly incorporated into the Edo State Security Network under the previous administration and have refused to surrender their weapons, which are now being used for criminal activities, including robbery, kidnapping, and violent attacks.

The government further accused former Governor Godwin Obaseki of making provocative remarks before the election, including a declaration that “Nigeria would burn,” suggesting that this was a deliberate plan backed by the arming of thugs.

The Edo government called on security agencies to investigate, apprehend those involved, and ensure they face legal consequences.

Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace in the state.

In response, PDP State Chairman, Hon. Tony Azeigbemi, dismissed the allegations, calling them an attempt to deflect from the government’s inability to address insecurity.

He criticized Governor Okpebholo for engaging in blame games rather than taking decisive action to improve security.

Azeigbemi pointed out that since Okpebholo took office, Edo State has witnessed increased lawlessness, with at least 35 innocent citizens reportedly killed in recent weeks by armed groups and herdsmen, while several others sustained injuries and properties were destroyed.

He added that the state, which was once regarded as one of the safest under Obaseki’s leadership, has now become a hub for kidnappings and violent crimes.

Azeigbemi urged the governor to focus on governance and security rather than shifting responsibility.
