A commercial two-storey building on Iweka Road, near Ochanja Main Market in Onitsha South LGA, Anambra, was engulfed in flames on Tuesday evening.

Chukwudi Chiketa, the chief of the Anambra Fire Service, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.

He stated that firefighters were alerted at around 9:35 p.m. and promptly responded.

While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, the swift intervention of the fire service helped contain the damage.

Four shops in the building, stocked with furniture materials like leather and foam, were affected.

However, many other shops were saved. Firefighters worked through the night, finally withdrawing at about 3:05 a.m.

Residents and business owners were seen at the scene, attempting to salvage any remaining goods from the affected shops.
