Tragedy struck during a birthday thanksgiving service in Lagos as a hotelier, Otunba Kunle Akinyele, collapsed and died at the church event organized in celebration of his wife’s 60th birthday.
The incident occurred on Saturday at Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Iyanu, Odemuyiwa District Headquarters in Egbeda.
The thanksgiving service was held in honor of his wife, Deaconess Catherine Adejoke Akinyele.
According to reports, Akinyele appeared distressed during the service and gestured for assistance—possibly requesting water or an inhaler—before suddenly slumping.
A video posted by digital creator Ayoade Ojeniyi showed Akinyele visibly struggling before collapsing.
Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and the news of his passing quickly spread, bringing the celebration to an abrupt and heartbreaking halt.
The plan had been for the family and guests to move to a reception at Noble Castle Events Centre in Igando following the church service.
Vendors and entertainers had already arrived at the venue as early as 10 a.m. in preparation for the event, which was scheduled to begin by 2 p.m.
One of the event vendors recounted speaking with Akinyele shortly before the incident, noting that everything had been set—the decorations, food, cocktails, palm wine, and a full live band.
News of his sudden death left many in shock.
Social media users responded with expressions of sorrow and reflections on the importance of health and well-being.
Some urged men to prioritize their health, pointing to increasing reports of similar incidents.
Others simply offered prayers and words of comfort.
Though the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed, the somber turn of events has prompted a wave of condolences and reminded many of the unpredictability and fragility of life.
