Pope Francis was buried in his beloved Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome following a funeral mass held in St Peter’s Square, the Vatican announced on Saturday.
The 88-year-old Argentine pontiff, who passed away on Monday, was laid to rest during a solemn 30-minute ceremony that began at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT) in the historic basilica.
