The Nigeria Labour Congress has stated that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, does not require an alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party or political figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai to win the 2027 presidential election.
In an exclusive interview, Professor Theophilus Ndubuaku, Deputy President of the NLC Political Commission, described Obi as a popular and credible candidate with nationwide support.
He expressed confidence that Obi could defeat President Bola Tinubu in a transparent electoral process.
Ndubuaku dismissed any speculation about Obi returning to the PDP, describing the party as deeply divided and lacking political relevance.
He pointed to the 2023 election results, in which Obi secured significant votes, including defeating Tinubu in Lagos, as evidence of his widespread acceptance.
According to him, Obi’s appeal, combined with local and international support, would be enough to secure victory if the Independent National Electoral Commission conducts a fair election.
His remarks follow a recent declaration by the Obidients Movement reaffirming its loyalty to Obi, regardless of the party platform he chooses for the next election.
The group’s National Coordinator, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, maintained that Nigeria is in urgent need of competent leadership, and only Obi has the vision and integrity to lead the country out of its economic challenges.
Ndubuaku echoed this sentiment, saying Obi has support across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and emphasizing that any suggestion for him to return to the PDP is misguided.
He contrasted the Labour Party’s internal issues—resolved by the Supreme Court—with what he described as the PDP’s ongoing, unresolved leadership crisis.
He also addressed concerns about zoning and regional power rotation, noting that fears surrounding Obi’s potential eight-year presidency are misplaced.
He said Obi’s focus is on governance, not political ambition, and argued that the former Anambra State governor could make a significant impact within a shorter timeframe.
