The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has confirmed the tragic death of one of its physiotherapists, Dr. Alex Ogunniyi, who was fatally shot near the hospital.

According to the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Joshua Uwaila, Dr. Ogunniyi was killed last Friday while on his way to have lunch at an eatery located behind the hospital.

Uwaila, speaking on behalf of UBTH management, stated that a formal petition has been sent to the Edo State Police Command, with a copy also forwarded to the Department of State Services (DSS), requesting a thorough investigation into the incident and the apprehension of those responsible.

Preliminary information suggests that Dr. Ogunniyi was struck by a stray bullet during a chase between two vehicles.

Gunfire reportedly erupted from the trailing car, and a bullet hit Ogunniyi in the neck.

Despite being rushed to the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department, he was pronounced dead.

In response to the incident, several healthcare workers at UBTH staged a protest to express their grief and demand justice for their slain colleague.
