Residents of Maiduguri were jolted awake in the early hours of Thursday as multiple explosions erupted from Giwa Barracks, located in the heart of Borno State’s capital.

The blasts, which began around 12:05 a.m., sent shockwaves through nearby neighborhoods.

Witnesses described loud explosions and red flares lighting up the sky, causing many to flee their homes in panic.

Locals reported that the explosions appeared to originate from the barracks’ armoury.

Firefighters and emergency responders were seen rushing to the scene, with sirens echoing throughout the area.

“We are safe, but very scared,” said resident Rakiya Garba.

“There are no gunshots, so it doesn’t seem to be an attack, but the explosions keep happening.”

Deputy Governor Dr. Umar Kadafur confirmed that the incident was caused by a fire outbreak in the armoury section of the barracks.

He urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified reports, stressing that it was not a Boko Haram attack.

Security forces are currently managing the situation, and residents have been advised to stay indoors as a precaution.
