The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for Monday’s deadly bombing in Borno State that killed 26 travelers.

The group announced its involvement via its Telegram channel on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

The attack occurred around 12:00 p.m. when an Isuzu pickup van traveling from Kala-Balge to Gamboru Ngala ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) near Furunduma village.

Authorities suspect the IED was planted by insurgents.

Borno State Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed the death toll, which included 16 men, four women, and six children.

He added that the driver and two other passengers were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment.

This attack follows a similar incident just over two weeks ago, when a passenger bus hit an IED on the Maiduguri–Damboa Road, killing eight and injuring 11.

Security forces have since stepped up patrols in the region, as investigations into both incidents continue.
