The Ondo State Police Command has responded to reports circulating in sections of the media about an alleged letter purportedly authored by a bandit linked to the 2022 Owo church massacre, allegedly threatening another attack.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police clarified that the authenticity of the letter remains unverified.

However, the Command said the disturbing report prompted immediate security action to prevent any potential threat and maintain public order.

According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the deployment of security personnel to all churches and mosques across the state, particularly on worship days.

Surveillance and patrol operations have also been stepped up statewide as part of efforts to bolster public confidence.

While urging the public to remain calm, the Command cautioned against the spread of unverified or false information capable of inciting panic.

It warned that sharing such reports could jeopardize ongoing security efforts and inflame tension unnecessarily.

“The Ondo State Police Command uses this medium to urge media houses and members of the public to desist from spreading unverified information or fake news that could heighten tension and cause unnecessary panic. Such actions are counterproductive and capable of undermining the security progress we have collectively achieved,” the statement read.

The Police assured residents of their safety and encouraged them to go about their daily activities without fear.

It also called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movement or information to the nearest police station or through emergency contact lines provided by the Command.
