The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), led by Comrade Olushola Oladoja, has strongly criticized the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for the delayed administration of the English Language paper on Wednesday, reportedly due to a leaked exam question.
According to NANS, the exam, rescheduled to take place between 4:00 and 7:00 PM, placed undue strain on students, especially those in rural areas.
The association described the delay as both insensitive and dangerous, citing security concerns and the negative impact on students’ mental readiness.
“This decision reflects a shocking disregard for students’ safety and well-being,” NANS said in a statement.
“Forcing candidates to write exams during late hours puts them at risk, especially in areas with poor infrastructure and security challenges.”
The student body also condemned WAEC’s repeated struggles with exam security, stating that continued leaks point to systemic failures within the council’s operations. NANS called on WAEC to take full responsibility and implement stronger security measures, including the use of technology and improved staff training.
In addition to demanding accountability for the leak, NANS urged WAEC to issue a public apology to students and their families for the disruption and stress caused.
The group also called for concrete steps to ensure the safe return of students after exams, particularly in remote locations.
“The future of Nigerian students must not be compromised by administrative lapses,” the statement added. “WAEC must act swiftly to restore trust and prevent a recurrence. NANS will continue to defend the rights of students and escalate this issue if necessary.”
