A commercial motorcycle operator, Adewale Jethro, was brutally murdered on Wednesday night by a suspected armed robber who posed as a passenger in Kabba, Kogi State.

The incident reportedly occurred along Best Way Road after the assailant lured Jethro to a remote location under the pretense of offering a higher-than-usual fare. Once in the secluded area, the attacker allegedly used a machete to hack the victim before fleeing with his motorcycle.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by Emmanuel Olorunmaiye, spokesperson for the Owe Titun Development Association, the weapon used in the attack was recovered at the scene, while the stolen motorcycle remains missing.

The association condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as a barbaric assault on human dignity and a grave threat to the peace of the community.

“We strongly condemn this wicked and cowardly act,” the group stated.

“We urge security agencies, traditional leaders, and community stakeholders to take urgent and decisive action to prevent further violence.”

The group extended its condolences to the bereaved family, assuring them of its support and commitment to a safer community.

Confirming the incident, Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, William Aya, told journalists that the Divisional Police Officer in Kabba had reported the murder.

He said the suspect had approached the victim around 9:00 p.m., offering a generous fare in exchange for a trip to a distant area.

“Unfortunately, upon reaching a deserted location, the suspect attacked the rider with a machete and escaped with the motorcycle,” Aya explained.

He added that although the victim was rushed to a hospital, he succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could be rendered.

His body has since been deposited at the morgue.

Aya also confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to apprehend the suspect.

He urged motorcycle operators to exercise caution, particularly when offered unusually high fares to isolated destinations.
