Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has announced plans to investigate the tragic death of one of its students, who reportedly died after jumping from a three-storey building.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening at a private student lodge near Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite-Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area.
According to reports, the male student leapt from the balcony after allegedly consuming a substance suspected to be “mkpurummiri” (crystal meth).
Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud sound and rushed to the scene, where they found the student critically injured and lying in a pool of blood.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was later pronounced dead.
A source at the scene said, “The victim was a tenant in the lodge.
After the fall, we checked his room and found his roommate in a disoriented state, likely under the influence of the same substance.”
Authorities have withheld the victim’s identity pending notification of his family.
The victim’s roommate is currently in custody and will be questioned further once he is medically stable.
Speaking on the development, UNIZIK’s Chief Safety Officer, Ken Chukwurah, confirmed the university’s involvement in the investigation. “We are still verifying what happened, how it happened, and confirming the student’s identity.
The incident occurred in a private lodge outside the university’s control,” he said.
