The Nasarawa State Police Command has initiated a search for a suspected gunrunner who abandoned a motorcycle and concealed an AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and ammunition along Giza-Kadarko Road in Keana Local Government Area.

According to a statement released Sunday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Rahman Nansel, police acted on intelligence indicating the suspect was transporting firearms.

A police checkpoint was set up on the road, and upon spotting officers, the suspect fled the scene, leaving the motorcycle behind.

Nansel explained, “On June 7, 2025, around 4 p.m., the Nasarawa State Police Commissioner, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, received credible intelligence about a suspected criminal moving arms and ammunition.

Acting swiftly, he ordered a coordinated operation to apprehend the individual.”

During the operation, police from the Giza Division stopped a man riding an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle.

When approached for questioning, the suspect abandoned the bike and escaped into nearby bushland.

A search of the abandoned motorcycle uncovered one AK-47 rifle (Breach No. 0413), two magazines, and 45 rounds of 7.62x39mm live ammunition.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the suspect and are investigating the origin and intended use of the recovered weapons.

Nansel urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency contacts.

“The Nasarawa State Police Command is committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens,” he said.

This incident follows a similar case reported earlier this week, when the police arrested Dahiru Abdullahi, a 75-year-old suspected arms trafficker, and Lawal Sani, a commercial driver, in a successful anti-kidnapping operation.
