JUST IN: APC warns Fubara to seek genuine peace or face impeachment

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has issued a warning to suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging him to pursue genuine reconciliation with state lawmakers or risk impeachment.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, Tony Okocha, Chairman of the APC Caretaker Committee in Rivers, said Fubara has yet to make any concrete moves toward resolving the political impasse with the elected members of the State House of Assembly.

The warning comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s March 18 declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, following the prolonged standoff between Fubara and Federal Capital Territory

Minister, Nyesom Wike. In response, the President suspended both the governor and the state assembly, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas as the sole administrator for a six-month period.

While governors from the Peoples Democratic Party have taken the matter to court, recent closed-door meetings involving Tinubu, Wike, and Fubara suggest that reconciliation may be on the horizon.

However, Okocha insisted no real progress has been made. “I can confirm that there is no reconciliation effort currently underway in Rivers,” he said.

“The suspended Governor Fubara has made no attempt to engage the lawmakers in meaningful dialogue.

Only sincere reconciliation can shield him from impeachment, especially as the Supreme Court’s ruling remains binding.”

His remarks come amid speculation that President Tinubu may announce Fubara’s reinstatement during the upcoming Democracy Day celebrations on June 12.
