A court in Argentina has sentenced nurse Brenda Cecilia Aguero to life imprisonment for the murder of five babies and the attempted murder of eight others at a hospital in Córdoba Province.
According to prosecutors, Aguero injected the infants with potassium and insulin between March and June 2022 while working in the neonatal ward of the Maternal and Child Hospital.
The substances were reportedly taken from emergency carts that lacked proper inventory tracking.
All the babies had been born healthy, but died under mysterious circumstances.
Eight others survived due to prompt medical intervention.
Under Argentine law, Aguero must serve at least 35 years before becoming eligible for parole.
Her sentencing was read out in court on Wednesday and broadcast by local media.
The case also implicated 10 others, including health officials and hospital staff, who faced charges of cover-up and negligence. Among them were a former provincial health minister, a former secretary of health, and the hospital’s ex-director.
Five of the co-defendants were convicted and handed lighter sentences, while the remaining five — including the top provincial officials — were acquitted, local outlet Infobae reported.
Aguero, who was arrested in 2022, denied any wrongdoing, claiming there was no evidence against her and accusing the media of branding her a “serial killer.”
