EFCC warns students against internet fraud, says there’s no shortcut to wealth

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerian students to steer clear of internet fraud and focus on using digital tools for meaningful and productive ventures.

Speaking at a one-day symposium titled “Safe Campus for Students: Combating Physical and Digital Threats”, held at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Mr Olukoyede emphasized that wealth gained through fraudulent means is short-lived and ultimately damaging.

“There is no shortcut to wealth and fame,” he stated, warning that engaging in cybercrime, commonly known as ‘Yahoo Yahoo,’ not only harms individuals but also tarnishes Nigeria’s image globally.

According to a statement issued on Monday by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Mr Olukoyede stressed that students should channel their creativity and energy into developing innovative ideas that contribute to national growth and prosperity.

He further cautioned that online fraud undermines the economy, deters foreign investment, and disrupts the government’s efforts toward sustainable development.

Highlighting the need for a cultural shift, Mr Olukoyede called on young Nigerians to view corruption as a common enemy and take active roles in fighting it.

“Let corruption become the enemy that you are determined to defeat. Be agents of change, whistleblowers, and intelligence gatherers,” he said.

The EFCC boss reiterated his commitment to working with youths and student leaders to promote integrity and build a future anchored on honesty, innovation, and national pride.
