The Nigerian Army has announced a three-day mourning period in honour of the 17 soldiers who were killed in a recent attack in Kwana Dutse, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to official reports, the soldiers were killed following coordinated assaults by armed gunmen on military bases in Niger and Kaduna States—an incident that has shocked the nation and sparked widespread condemnation.

In a statement released on Friday via the Army’s official website and social media platform X, the military confirmed the fatalities and said the mourning period would last from June 25 to June 27, 2025.

“As a mark of respect and deep gratitude to our fallen heroes, all Nigerian Army formations and units across the country are to fly the Army flag at half-mast throughout the mourning period,” the statement read.

The Army also directed all personnel to observe the period in solemn tribute, underscoring the institution’s reverence for the ultimate sacrifices made by its members in defense of the nation.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, the Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to honouring the memory and bravery of its fallen personnel.

The statement emphasized that the mourning period would serve as a moment of national reflection, drawing attention to the ongoing sacrifices made by military forces in securing the country.

As the nation mourns, military stakeholders and observers have highlighted the importance of sustained support for Nigeria’s armed forces, stressing that the Army’s gesture is a solemn reminder of the price paid by those who serve to keep the country safe.
