A well-known revenue collector in Benin City, identified as Emmanuel, also known as ‘Meme’, was shot dead on Thursday in what authorities suspect to be a cult-related attack.
Emmanuel, a member of the Professional Drivers on Wheels group, was reportedly trailed by unidentified gunmen in two vehicles to Akugbe Street, off 2nd West Junction near Oliha Market in Oredo Local Government Area.
He was shot inside a residential compound where he had sought refuge.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers fled the scene before security operatives arrived.
The victim’s body was later transported to a mortuary using a commercial bus.
A resident, Odion Osakue, who witnessed the incident, described the killing as both shocking and tragic.
When contacted on Friday, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident but noted that further details would be released as investigations progress.
