The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a full-scale rescue operation to apprehend the gunmen responsible for the abduction of a yet-to-be-identified individual in Awka, the state capital.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Friday when three armed men, operating in an unregistered stainless-coloured Toyota Highlander, kidnapped the victim near his residence after firing several gunshots indiscriminately.
A video of the abduction, currently circulating online, captured the moment the assailants shot into the air and forcefully took the victim away in the vehicle without a number plate.
In a statement on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the Command had intercepted the video and was using it to aid ongoing rescue efforts.
He gave assurance that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring the victim’s safe return.
“The Anambra State Police Command will leverage the viral video showing the criminal operation of three armed men who abducted a victim in Awka on June 27, 2025, for investigative purposes,” Ikenga stated.
He added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the individual who recorded the video, describing the act as brave and instrumental in supporting the ongoing investigation and rescue mission.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of community involvement in fighting crime, noting that such public participation enhances the effectiveness of law enforcement.
“The Command is committed to identifying the suspects, collecting evidence, and bringing those responsible to justice,” the statement concluded.
