The Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed two senior academic staff members over allegations of gross misconduct, including sexual harassment, financial impropriety, and abuse of students.
Their dismissal was approved during the 143rd Statutory Meeting of the university’s Governing Council, held on Thursday, July 3, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Emmanuel Fanu, the institution said the decision followed thorough investigations that found the lecturers guilty of multiple offences.
One of those dismissed is Dr. Olatunji Abanikanda, former Dean of the School of Agriculture at LASU’s Epe campus.
He was accused of subjecting 400-level students to degrading conditions during practical exercises, including leaving them exposed to harsh weather without food, water, or shelter from morning till night.
His actions came under scrutiny after a viral video surfaced online showing students soaked in rain while working on the school’s farm.
Fanu detailed the allegations against Abanikanda, which also included sexual harassment of female students, verbal abuse of staff and students, and unauthorized collection of money from both groups.
The university described his behavior as “prejudicial to the security of the university” and “unbecoming of a public officer.”
The second academic, Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem, who served as Coordinator of the Department of Animal Sciences at the same campus, was dismissed for financial misconduct and dereliction of duty.
She was accused of violating university procedures by keeping over ₦10.6 million—proceeds from the sale of farm produce—in her personal bank account instead of remitting it to the university’s coffers.
She also reportedly failed to comply with approved guidelines and curriculum standards.
The university said the actions of both lecturers amounted to “serious misconduct” and violated the institution’s Conditions of Service for Senior Staff.
Reaffirming its stance, the university management said it remains committed to upholding academic integrity, enforcing discipline, and ensuring a safe and respectful environment for students and staff.
