The Ondo State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled a human trafficking network operating in Akure, the state capital, rescuing 40 Ghanaian nationals who were lured into Nigeria under false promises of employment.

The operation was carried out by operatives of the Tactical Intelligence Response Squad (TIRS) after a formal complaint was filed through the Interpol Liaison Office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The breakthrough began with the rescue of one victim, David Angerinya, which led authorities to uncover 39 additional victims who were also deceived by the same group.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, three suspects — Hayford Nyamekye, Awine Alex, and Kojo Felix — have been arrested in connection with the case.

They are currently in custody and assisting police with ongoing investigations.

Preliminary findings revealed that the syndicate had been targeting unsuspecting West African citizens, promising them lucrative job offers and visa opportunities to Canada and other Western countries.

However, upon arrival in Nigeria, the victims were subjected to various forms of exploitation.

Police also found that many of the rescued Ghanaians either lacked valid travel documents or held expired ones.

Authorities have launched efforts to identify and apprehend the landlords and caretakers of the properties where the victims were kept, as they are suspected of aiding the illegal operations.

Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling human trafficking and other transnational crimes in the state.

He urged residents to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious activity in their communities, assuring that the police remain dedicated to ensuring the safety and protection of all lawful residents and visitors in Ondo State.
