At least 20 people were killed and several others injured on Monday night when gunmen, suspected to be Fulani militias, launched a deadly assault on the Bindi community in the Ta-Hoss district of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.
According to a statement issued by Gideon Manjal and Gadu Daniel Dong, Chairman and Publicity Secretary of the Riyom chapter of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), the attackers struck while residents were asleep, carrying out a house-to-house massacre.
As reported by Daily Post, the victims included women, children, and the elderly—many of whom were unable to escape.
The group said survivors identified the attackers as heavily armed Fulani extremists.
The gunmen reportedly made no secret of their intention to wipe out the community and seize their ancestral land.
“This attack follows a familiar pattern seen in other parts of Riyom and Plateau State,” the statement read. “Over 20 innocent people were slaughtered despite the presence of security forces and military hardware in the area. Homes were razed, families displaced, and the psychological toll deepened.”
COPDEM criticized the continued inaction of security agencies, noting that the attackers’ locations and hideouts have been consistently reported by local leaders, yet no meaningful intervention has occurred.
“This is not just a failure of security—it is a crisis of neglect and systemic compromise,” the group said.
They called on President Bola Tinubu, the Plateau State Government, and national security agencies to immediately launch a coordinated military operation to dismantle identified terror camps, declare a state of emergency in the affected areas, and provide humanitarian relief and trauma support.
The group also condemned the routine condolence messages and symbolic visits from officials, which they say have done little to prevent ongoing bloodshed.
“Our people are being buried daily. We are tired of empty condolences and hollow press statements.
The people of Ta-Hoss, like those in Jol, Rim, Bachi, Wereng, and Nding, deserve real protection, justice, and dignity,” the statement concluded.
