The Rivers State Police Command has uncovered a child trafficking syndicate operating from Aba in Abia State and rescued a pregnant woman during the operation.
Police operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested two suspects believed to be part of the network.
The suspects, identified as 28-year-old Sunshine Hart and 38-year-old Kingsley Ekocha, were apprehended on June 24, 2025, in Aba by detectives who extended their investigation beyond Rivers State.
During the raid, the police rescued a 24-year-old pregnant woman, Regina Sunday, who was allegedly held captive by the syndicate. She was placed under protective custody and, on June 30, went into labour. She delivered a baby boy at the Police Clinic in Port Harcourt. Both mother and child are reported to be in stable condition and receiving medical care.
The state police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the operation in a statement released Monday in Port Harcourt.
She noted that efforts are ongoing to track down other members of the syndicate who are currently on the run.
Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju praised the operation and reaffirmed the command’s dedication to tackling human trafficking.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could aid the ongoing fight against child trafficking in the state.
