Tragedy struck in Incheon, South Korea, when a 63-year-old man allegedly shot and killed his son with a homemade firearm during a birthday celebration held in honor of his own father, police reported on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at an apartment in Incheon, west of Seoul, where the suspect’s son—believed to be in his 30s—was attending the gathering alongside his wife, two children, and several friends. Authorities said the father fired two shots at his son, striking him in the chest.
The victim was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, according to police.
Investigators revealed that the weapon used was a pipe-shaped homemade gun.
A search of the suspect’s residence led to the discovery of 15 explosive devices, which were safely defused and removed by a special police unit. One of the devices was rigged to ignite using a plastic bottle filled with flammable liquid.
Further investigations uncovered nine additional homemade firearms in the suspect’s car, along with five to six metal pipes at his home.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency confirmed that a bomb threat made by the suspect prompted a search of his home in the Dobong district of northern Seoul.
As a precaution, 105 residents were evacuated from the building during the operation.
Police are continuing their investigation into the incident and the suspect’s motives.
