Alhaji Adamu Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned from his position as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State.
Adamu served under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress in a sweeping political shift that altered the state’s power dynamics.
Although Adamu had earlier distanced himself from the wave of defections that saw the governor and top government functionaries leave the PDP last Friday, he formally confirmed on Monday that he had stepped down from the State Executive Council with immediate effect.
In his resignation letter, which was made available to journalists late Monday, the former commissioner said his decision came after “deep personal reflection and careful consideration.”
He expressed gratitude to Governor Fintiri for the opportunity to serve in his administration and appreciated the people of Adamawa State for their prayers, encouragement and support throughout his tenure.
Fintiri had on February 27 announced his defection to the APC, moving alongside most key officials in his cabinet and party structure in the state.
Adamu was said to be one of only three commissioners who initially declined to join the governor in the political switch.
In total, 22 commissioners, 39 special advisers and members of the state executive committee of the PDP in Adamawa reportedly crossed over to the APC in the large-scale realignment.
