The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has cautioned Nigerians to strictly adhere to the conditions of their United States visas, following rising concerns from U.S. authorities over increasing instances of visa misuse by Nigerian nationals.
In an advisory issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Akinsola Akinlabi, urged all visa holders to comply fully with the purpose stated during their application to avoid sanctions, including visa revocation and deportation.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public of concerns raised by the United States Government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas by Nigerians,” the statement read.
“All visa holders are advised to strictly adhere to the purpose stated in their visa applications. Breach of visa conditions, including overstaying, may attract severe penalties, including removal from the U.S. and permanent ineligibility for future travel.”
Akinlabi emphasized that the U.S. conducts continuous immigration checks even after arrival, and any violation of visa terms could have long-term consequences for offenders.
The advisory also extended specific warnings to Nigerian students studying in the U.S., advising them to remain enrolled in active academic programs and avoid unauthorized absences or withdrawals, which could result in visa cancellation and ineligibility for future visas.
In a further caution, the NIS noted that U.S. consular officers reserve the right to deny visas to individuals suspected of traveling with the intent to give birth in the U.S. in order to secure citizenship for their children—a practice commonly referred to as “birth tourism.”
“The NIS will continue to collaborate with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to ensure Nigeria is not included in any expanded visa restrictions,” Akinlabi added.
He stressed that compliance with visa regulations is critical to preserving lawful travel channels and protecting the country’s international reputation.
“We are calling on all Nigerian citizens to comply with U.S. visa rules, as such conduct is essential to safeguarding legitimate travel opportunities,” he said.
