The Ekiti State Government has added the names of seven newly convicted rapists to the state’s Sex Offenders’ Register.
The Ministry of Justice, which maintains the register in line with the government’s zero-tolerance policy for gender-based violence, published the names and photographs of the offenders in public notices on Friday.
The move, according to the ministry, is aimed at naming and shaming those found guilty of sexual violence, particularly against minors.
The convicts — Jayeoba Oluwafemi, 56; Peter Moses, 25; Prophet Adeleye Akingbaso, 48; Alobaloye Abidemi, 27; Onilearo Sogo, 44; Fajana Olajide, 26; and Olaniyi Anu, 30 — were all sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ekiti State High Court.
They are currently serving their sentences at the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti.
According to the ministry, the crimes involved victims ranging from five to 17 years old, with some cases involving gang rape.
The offenders hail from different parts of Ekiti and neighbouring states but were all residents within Ekiti at the time of their crimes.
The public notices detailed each convict’s identity, former address, and offence, reaffirming the state’s commitment to holding sexual offenders accountable and deterring future crimes.
