Tragedy struck Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on Wednesday as a student from the Faculty of Dentistry reportedly took his own life shortly after the release of his examination results.
The incident was confirmed by the President of the Dentistry Students’ Association, Adebayo Idris, in a statement describing the death as a devastating blow to the university community.
“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of our colleagues in the Faculty of Dentistry,” the statement read.
“We have received the painful news that he took his own life shortly after the release of his examination results.
This loss is not just the departure of a promising young mind, but a painful reminder of the silent battles many students face.”
The association expressed condolences to the student’s family, friends, and classmates, noting that the tragedy would leave many reeling with grief and unanswered questions.
It also urged students to prioritise mental health, seek help when needed, and support one another in times of distress.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health, and no one should ever feel alone in their struggles,” it stated, adding that it would intensify advocacy for improved student welfare and counselling services to prevent similar incidents.
