The Lagos State Police Command has disbanded a tactical squad and ordered the detention of its operatives after a viral video showed them assaulting a motorist during a stop-and-search operation.

The footage, posted on X (formerly Twitter) by a user identified as Somto (@General_Somto), captured the officers stopping a motorist and attempting to seize his glasses, which they suspected had a hidden camera.

The altercation escalated when one of the officers struck the man.

Reacting on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, had taken swift disciplinary action.

“Following a preliminary investigation, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate detention of the entire team.

The officers will face an orderly room trial to ensure justice is served swiftly and transparently,” Hundeyin said.

He added that the squad had been dissolved, while a new tactical unit had been constituted to operate under international best practices, with strict respect for human rights and zero tolerance for corruption.

Similarly, the Nigeria Police Force, in a statement on its official X page, condemned the officers’ conduct, describing it as “unacceptable.”

It confirmed that the Lagos Command had been directed to restructure the squad and ensure those involved face appropriate sanctions.
