The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed recent comments by Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate.

The ADC described Datti’s criticism of the opposition coalition as a personal opinion that does not represent the party’s stance.

In a statement signed by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Jackie Wayas, the ADC reiterated its commitment to uniting opposition forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Baba-Ahmed, while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, had accused the opposition coalition of “deceiving Nigerians” and claimed it lacked the capacity to rescue the country from underdevelopment.

He also declared his intention to run alongside Mr. Peter Obi in 2027.

The ADC, however, maintained that the coalition was built through wide consultations to present a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

It listed key figures in the alliance, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, Senator David Mark, former Minister Rauf Aregbesola, and Mr. Peter Obi.

According to the statement, these leaders put national interest above partisan divides, with the goal of delivering competent and compassionate leadership.

The ADC also recalled Obi’s endorsement of the coalition as a platform for the 2027 elections, quoting him as saying that no single group can change Nigeria alone and urging unity to tackle poverty and insecurity.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his personal opinions and do not reflect the position of the ADC or its coalition partners,” Wayas stated.

Despite the criticism, the party described Baba-Ahmed as a respected voice and urged him to join the coalition’s efforts.

“Since the coalition is a collective effort that requires the strength and skills of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” the ADC added.

Reaffirming its mission, the party called on Nigerians to support the coalition in its drive to rescue the nation.u.
