Police charge Sowore with forgery, false publication

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has filed criminal charges against politician and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged forgery and false publication.

In a three-count charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/374/2025 before the Federal High Court, Abuja, Sowore was accused of conspiring to forge an official police signal and publishing false information about the police on his media platforms.

According to the charge, Sowore and Sahara Reporters allegedly forged a police wireless message purportedly signed by the Principal Staff Officer to the IGP on July 30, 2025. He was also accused of posting the forged document and other “inciting materials” on Facebook the following day, allegedly with the intent to provoke mutiny against the Federal Government.

The offences, the prosecution said, are punishable under Section 1(2)(C) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act and Section 114 of the Penal Code.

Sowore was scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, but the case stalled after prosecutors failed to serve Sahara Reporters, listed as the second defendant.

Prosecution counsel, Wisdom Madaki, told the court that efforts were underway to serve the media outfit through substituted means, including newspaper publication. He requested an adjournment.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the application and adjourned the matter until September 15 for arraignment.
