The Bauchi State Police Command has appealed for calm following the killing of a soldier allegedly shot by a mobile police inspector in Alkaleri Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, CSP Ahmed Wakil, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori-Aliyu, confirmed that a joint investigation with the Nigerian Army has begun to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports, the late Master Warrant Officer Ali Haruna of the 33 Artillery Brigade was shot on August 25 while attempting to stop a truck suspected of conveying solid minerals from an illegal mining site in Futuk village.
He was later confirmed dead at Gombe Specialist Hospital.
Omolori-Aliyu clarified that preliminary findings showed the truck belonged to Guruje Mining Company Limited and ZURFI Company Limited, both licensed operators with approval to extract lead and zinc in Alkaleri.
The mobile police officers attached to the companies, including the alleged shooter, Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, were officially deployed to provide security.
He added that detectives and military police have been assigned to investigate the incident and ensure justice.
