The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation into a traffic officer captured in a viral video allegedly attempting to extort money from a commercial tricycle (keke) rider at Azikiwe Junction along Aba Road, Umuahia.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, showed a woman confronting the officer over the alleged extortion.
Although the officer denied the allegation, the keke rider appeared to confirm it, displaying the cash he claimed was meant for the officer.
Police spokesperson, ASP Maureen Chinaka, said in a statement on Tuesday that the officer had been identified and the case referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for a thorough probe.
“The officer involved has been identified, and investigation into the incident is ongoing at the state CID,” the statement read.
The State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, stressing that professionalism and accountability remain central to policing in the state.
“In line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, officers and men of the Command will continue to be professional, service-driven, rule of law compliant, and people-friendly in the discharge of their duties across the state,” Isa stated.
