The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced the payment of arrears of the recently approved N77,000 monthly allowance after a two-month suspension.

This was confirmed on Wednesday, marking the first disbursement since June 3. The arrears cover the period between July 2024 and March 2025.

Recall that on April 5, the Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had assured that corps members who recently completed their service would also benefit from the new allowance.

Speaking at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, Nafiu said, “Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details.”

He further stressed government’s commitment to the welfare of corps members, adding, “Nigerians should not fret about that because the government is both responsible and responsive to their needs.”

A former corps member who confirmed receipt of the payment told The Nation yesterday, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”

The payment comes after weeks of anxiety among beneficiaries, with many expressing frustration over the delay in implementing the new allowance, which government had promised as part of measures to cushion the economic hardship faced by young Nigerians.
