A commercial motorcycle rider, identified as Monday Mbah, was shot dead by gunmen on Monday evening in the Agingi community of Bassa Local Government Area, Plateau State.
Mbah was ambushed near the gate of the Rukuba Military Barracks around 7 p.m. while riding his motorcycle. Eyewitnesses said the attackers carted away his bike after shooting him.
A resident, Mary Hassan, told our correspondent that locals heard gunshots shortly before discovering the victim’s body.
Efforts to reach the spokesman of the Plateau State Police Command, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone was switched off.
However, sources at the state police headquarters confirmed that the corpse had been evacuated.
“We are aware of the unfortunate incident. The body has already been removed from the scene,” a police source said.
The killing adds to the wave of violent attacks that have plagued Plateau communities. In April, more than 50 people were massacred in the Irigwe community, Zikke, Kwall District, Bassa LGA.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang has repeatedly vowed to restore peace in the state, deploying security personnel to vulnerable areas and enforcing restrictions on night grazing and cattle transportation.
