Kenya Airways has paid the sanction fee imposed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for breaching passenger rights, including the widely reported case of Nigerian traveller, Gloria Omisore.
The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Michael Achimugu, confirmed the payment in a post on his official X account on Thursday.
He disclosed that the airline settled the penalty on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, after a series of meetings involving the Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria, airline officials, and representatives from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
“Kenya Airways has, on Wednesday 17/09/2025, paid the sanction fee as a penalty for the Gloria Omisore and other consumer protection-related infractions,” Achimugu stated.
He explained that the sanctions were not punitive but intended to strengthen compliance with passenger handling and safety standards.
While commending the airline for complying, Achimugu stressed that the fine payment does not conclude the matter, noting that the timeframe for resolving the cases had already lapsed. “The NCAA will follow through and is assuring both passengers and airlines of its commitment to protecting their rights and responsibilities,” he added.
The NCAA maintained that it would continue to enforce aviation regulations to safeguard consumer rights and ensure airlines adhere to international standards.
The case drew public attention in February when Omisore accused Kenya Airways of mishandling her after she was denied boarding in Nairobi due to a missing Schengen transit visa. She claimed the airline had earlier assured her she was eligible to travel.
The incident led to a prolonged layover, during which she requested accommodation and medical care that were not provided.
Following an investigation, the NCAA found Kenya Airways guilty of breaching consumer protection regulations and misleading the public in its response.
On May 7, 2025, the authority sanctioned the airline, ordering compensation of 1,000 Special Drawing Rights for each of three affected passengers, including Omisore, as well as a public apology.
