There was commotion in the Isale-Oko area of Sagamu, Ogun State, on Wednesday when two inmates attempted to escape shortly after a court session.

Sources told reporters that the incident occurred as officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) were returning the inmates to custody. The pair reportedly bolted from the officers, prompting a chase.

“One was rearrested immediately, while the other managed to flee but was later captured the same day,” an eyewitness source disclosed.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Ogun State Command of the NCoS, Olayinka Owolola, said the escape bid was foiled without violence.

“They attempted, but we captured the two of them without any shooting or injuries.

We intend to return them to court to face prosecution for the attempted escape,” Owolola said.

Cases of jailbreaks and attempted escapes are not uncommon in Nigeria’s correctional facilities.

In August, 16 inmates broke out of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, after overpowering personnel on duty. Five officers were injured in that incident.
