Residents of Atan-Ota in Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State were thrown into panic after a man, identified only as Moses, was gruesomely killed in a suspected cult clash.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the attack was carried out by members of the Aye Confraternity. Disturbing video clips circulating online show the assailants hacking at the victim’s wrist with machetes while boasting in pidgin English, “We are the ones in charge.”
In one of the videos, Moses appeared unconscious as several cutlasses struck him repeatedly.
Another clip showed his lifeless body with a mutilated wrist, surrounded by wailing mourners.
Police spokesperson in the state, CSP Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident in a brief message on Monday.
The killing is believed to be linked to an ongoing supremacy battle among rival cult groups in the area.
Though Ogun has witnessed fewer cult-related clashes in recent times, the latest incident underscores the persistent menace of cult violence in the South-West.
In Lagos, at least 10 people have been killed in less than 10 days in similar cult-related attacks.
