A Togolese driver has been arrested by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) after allegedly causing a serious accident that left a pedestrian critically injured on Lagos Island.
The incident occurred on Monday at the Adeniji Adele intersection, inward Ilubirin, when the driver of a Mazda car with registration number EPE 749 GS reportedly lost control while driving at high speed and rammed into a pedestrian crossing the road.
According to eyewitnesses, the motorist attempted to flee the scene but was intercepted by LASTMA officials and handed over to officers at the Adeniji Adele Police Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, said emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) were immediately called to the scene and transported the victim, who sustained severe injuries and heavy bleeding, to the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the driver’s conduct, warning that reckless speeding remains a major cause of preventable road accidents in the state.
“Motorists must exercise restraint and comply strictly with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and property,” Bakare-Oki said.
