The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed the death of a 15-year-old boy, Sunusi Abubakar, who drowned in a pond in Jigawa State.
NSCDC spokesperson in the state, Badaruddeen Tijjani, disclosed this in a statement issued in Dutse on Wednesday.
He said the incident occurred on Tuesday evening in Gabari village, Chamo District.
According to him, the deceased went swimming in a pond locally known as Mahayin gidan Toro, about 1.5 kilometres north of the village, but failed to return home.
“Prior to the discovery, his shoes and trousers were seen abandoned by the riverbank.
His father confirmed that he went to swim at about 5 p.m. but did not come back. A search was launched by the community, and his body was found this morning,” Tijjani said.
He added that the body showed no signs of injury and had been released to the family for burial.
The NSCDC spokesperson advised parents and guardians to caution children against swimming in unsafe open water bodies to prevent similar tragedies.
He also reiterated the corps’ commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
