The two remaining members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ondo State House of Assembly have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking the complete collapse of the opposition’s presence in the chamber.
The defectors are the former Minority Leader, Hon. Olajide Oguntodu, representing Akure South 1 Constituency, and his deputy, Hon. Oluwatoyin Daodu, who represents Akoko South West Constituency 1.
Their defection was officially announced during Thursday’s plenary session presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Chief) Olamide Oladiji, at the Assembly complex in Akure.
Reading their letters of resignation from the PDP, the Speaker welcomed the lawmakers to the APC fold, noting that their move would further consolidate the party’s dominance in the state legislature.
In their letters, Oguntodu and Daodu said their decision followed wide consultations with family members, constituents, and political associates. They also cited lingering internal crises within the PDP as a major factor behind their exit.
Speaker Oladiji hailed the development as “historic” for Ondo State and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his exemplary leadership.
He also praised Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s developmental strides and urged the new APC members to contribute meaningfully to the progress of both the party and the state.
Meanwhile, the Assembly raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Ogbagi Akoko–Irun Akoko road in Akoko North West Local Government Area, warning that the neglected route poses serious threats to lives, property, and economic activities.
The lawmakers resolved to call the attention of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, and the Director-General of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to the situation.
The House Committee on Works and Infrastructure was also mandated to liaise with FERMA and submit a report within a specified period.
