Several persons have been reportedly trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, Oyingbo, Lagos State.

The incident, which occurred around 12:20 a.m., was confirmed by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, in a situation report released on Monday morning.

Adeseye said a rescue team from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station was immediately deployed to the scene following a distress call. She explained that the structure had earlier been marked as distressed before it eventually gave way while residents were still inside.

She added that the rescue operation was ongoing as emergency responders continued to search for survivors under the debris.

So far, 15 people — including seven men, four women and four children — have been rescued with varying degrees of injuries and taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan, on Lagos Island.

As of the time of filing this report, rescue efforts were still underway, with emergency officials working through the rubble.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often blamed on poor enforcement of safety regulations, the use of substandard materials, and weak structural supervision.

In November 2021, a 21-storey building under construction in the Ikoyi area collapsed, killing at least 42 people. More recently, in September 2025, a four-storey structure under construction in Yaba also collapsed, leaving several people dead and others trapped.
