The Imo State Police Command has concluded plans to arraign five men accused of brutally assaulting a 55-year-old woman, Mrs Ndidiamaka Agu, in the Emekuku community of Owerri North Local Government Area.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed this on Monday in Owerri, noting that the arrests followed an order by the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, who on November 3, 2025, directed a thorough investigation after a disturbing video of the attack went viral.

Okoye said five of the six suspects captured in the footage had been apprehended, while efforts were ongoing to track down the sixth suspect, who remains at large.

Those arrested include 40-year-old Onyekachi Njoku; 45-year-old Chiazor Osuji; 46-year-old Chukwuma Iwuala; Eugene Njoku; and 35-year-old Njoku Emmanuel, all residents of Uboegbelu, Emekuku.

In the viral video, the suspects were seen repeatedly attacking Mrs Agu, ignoring pleas from another woman who begged them to stop.

The attackers also attempted to assault the woman filming the incident and were seen trying to force their way into her home.

Okoye said operatives of the X-Squad Unit swung into action immediately after the CP’s directive, leading to the arrest of the five suspects, all of whom have reportedly confessed to taking part in the assault.

He added that the sixth suspect, identified as Onyedikachi Njoku, had fled and was being actively sought by police operatives.

The police spokesperson said the suspects would be arraigned soon on charges appropriate to the severity of their actions.

CP Danjuma had earlier condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and warning that any attempt to intimidate citizens who assist law enforcement would be met with strict sanctions.

A source in the community told our PUNCH that the assault was allegedly carried out because Mrs Agu had assisted police operatives with information in an earlier case involving the suspects.
